Today I came back from class this morning and I had big plans for a long run. My shins have been bothering me a bit so I didn’t know if I would make it through a long run or if I was going to have to push it back a day or two. I decided to just start running and see how I felt!
Before I started running I had to make myself a quick little snack for some fuel. I only had a green monster for breakfast around 7 am this morning and I needed some more fuel before I headed out for my long run today!
I had some tea and a Kashi waffle with my new favorite spread combo. Mmmm Mmmm good!
I was toying with the idea of going for my long run outside, but then I got lazy and just went to the gym. Sometimes its so much easier just to head down to the gym than to suit up for a long run in the great outdoors!
Is it weird to call myself lazy for running 12 miles inside of outside?
You know what I mean. I just didn’t want to spend 30 minutes getting my outside running gear together. By the time you make sure everything’s charged and put layer on top of layer, lots of time is wasted! Besides it wasn’t very nice out today anyways!
So I settled into a nice groove on the treadmill today. I watched some of my favorite daytime TV shows and before I knew it my miles were done! I did 12 miles in 1:52 – comes out to a 9:21 pace. I felt really good about it because I only set out to run 11 miles and then made a game time decision to run another one!
I ran a few of my miles in my new race shirt, which is always fun! After 12 miles on the t-mill I was pooped!
But I had something special waiting for me when I was done with my long run….
That doesn’t look so bad, right? I think it actually looks kind of nice.
I had some of my favorite bath time treats with me today. I was making every attempt to have this be more like a regular bath than a ice bath. I had some H20 for extra hydration, a good book, my blackberry (for entertainment), a healthy snack, some tea and candles for added warmth!
All that fun stuff plus a big bowl of ice!
Before I jumped in I put on a under armor-esque top to attempt to keep my upper body warm. I also grabbed a last minute hug from Jackson, I caught him mid-yawn. He’s so silly!
All ready to get in.
Jackson was looking at me like I was crazy. I pretended to take him in the bath with me, he looked down at the cold water and said “No way mom!” He wasn’t feeling it!
PS- Can you tell how bad Jackson needs a haircut? He can barely see!
I put my feet in and wanted to scream. I had such a hard time getting into this ice bath today. It was seriously torture! I put my feet in and out, in and out. I started to pick out the ice and turned on a little hot water in attempt to get the temperature bearable.
Jackson had to give me a pep talk to finally get me in the water. I almost shed a tear it was so freezing! He told me how much better my legs would feel tomorrow and I knew he was right!
Jackson is wise beyond his years. But then when I told him he should come in and play with me, he said “No Way!” and ran off! What a little punk. I wish he would have stayed and kept me company!
The last time I took an ice bath, it was after 11 miles, and my legs felt amazing the next day! That is what kept me getting further and further into the ice bath until my legs were fully immerged.
I had fun playing with my camera’s self timer while in the freezing water. It definitely kept me entertained and my tea kept me somewhat warm!
Don’t try this at home unless you are super hardcore! 🙂
Have you ever taken an ice bath? What do you do to help quick recovery after long runs?
After this 12 mile run today I feel totally ready for next weekend! 11 days and counting! I can’t wait to get down to Disney and embrace the warm weather. I am also pumped to meet so many of my fellow blogger friends!
I am off to do some more stretching! TTFN! Ta-ta for now!

Your a trooper.
Wow, so that really works?! Sounds like torture. You are hard core, my friend. 🙂
I've never had an ice bath but I've had to bathe when the hot water heater was broken. Felt like an ice bath!
when i was running in college it was mandatory that we take ice baths after all our workouts. it really does help to just jump right and have something to keep you distracted.
congrats on finishing the run!
I've never taken an ice bath but I actually want to give it a try!
So, I decided that I am doing the Princess Half. Can you add me to the list and where the meet up is.
Thanks!
I've never taken an ice bath for two reasons. 1) I don't run so there is no need and 2) I squeal in horror if my bath water isn't almost scalding hot so there is no way I could stand to put ICE in my bath! LOL
ack, an ice bath sounds like the most painful thing right about you — I really admire your will power girl.. I would've peaced out after 1 second! hell, I wouldn't have even gotten in!
Lots of FUN bloggers will be at Disney, bet it will be a blast.
i used to have to take ice whirlpool baths after b-ball practice every day.. Funny but you just get used to it. I know sounds funny..
Love all the fun pictures. Wet clothes give me anxiety…LOL
Wow, with this weather right now I could never ever climb into an ice bath.
Also, I am far too clumsy to bring my phone anywhere near a bathtub!
No ice bath, I would rather have sore legs, but I do mix ice with rum, lime, and ginger beer, that seems to help me with any sore muscle.
Love that Jackson is right there all the time. My dog is the same way!
I can't remember where I got this tip, but it's a little easier to tolerate the cold if you get in the tub while the water is running, then add the ice in after. That way instead of one big shock it's a gradual cooling.
