I’m a Baller…a Melon Baller

If you have been reading the blog for a while you know that I am a big fan of unnecessary kitchen gadgets. They make me happy in crazy ways! Some of my favorite ones include : my beloved banana slicer, the fabulous cherry pitter and my lovely peanut butter mixer

Let me introduce you to my new kitchen BFF– The Melon Baller

My mom has been using a melon baller ever since I can remember. She used it to cut up watermelons, regular melons, cantaloupe and anything else you can imagine.

This little gadget is two sided, one side makes smaller balls and the opposite side makes some larger balls depending on your ball needs.

My mom sent fiancé and I home with half of a rather large watermelon from this past weekend down in Bethany Beach, Delaware. I love bringing home fruit from the beach!

To use the melon baller you simply insert the device into your melon of choice like so.

Scoop out the fruit with a little twist of your wrist.

And embrace the pretty ball of melon!

Seriously how cute is this? I love it!

I made a whole bowlful of watermelon balls for fiancé and I to nibble on! These are the last few weeks to enjoy summer fruit before the Fall is officially here!

Doesn’t this bowl of fruit look so much more fun to eat now?

Balling fruit is a fun way to make a fun appetizer for a party, or maybe it would be something kids would enjoy to eat too!

The bigger side of the melon baller sized the watermelon a little bit bigger than a large grape.

Sure you don’t NEED this little appliance, but it makes fruit fun!

Would you use a melon baller? What’s your favorite unnecessary kitchen appliance?

I think chopping up the melon would still be faster, but if it's about presentation, I would use a melon baller. 😛 I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get one.

I love my melon baller too! I also use it to scoop the seeds out of tomatoes – works great. My favorite uni-tasker is my crinkle cutter. I mean, you could cut potatoes with a knife to make oven fries, but the crinkle cuts are more fun.

I am a total gadget lover too. I have a melon baller, but rarely do we use it. I would have to plan ahead a bit more to get them out into cute little balls. Hubby is far to impatient to wait for them. 🙂

While helping my mother move this weekend, we began organzing her unneccesary kitchen utensils. She pulled out one and said, “what the heck is this.” I triumphantly explained the it was a apple corer (but not a slicer) which I often use for Apple pies.
But you are right, melon ballers are great, and you can even use it for little balls of icecream for your pie.
