Today I took part in another 5K race in Philadelphia! This one was held at the Art Museum, which is right in my little neck of the woods – I figure I can’t say no to a race I can literally roll out of bed and go to. Plus it was a 9:00am start time – score!
This was my first time running the Run for Clean Air 5K – which is Philadelphia’s largest Earth Day event.
It’s a Certified Green Run featuring: Bicycle Valet, Recycling and Composting of all waste, Running Shoe recycling, Reusable Run bags , Clean, Renewable Energy Generation, Paperless Online Registration, Plantable Seed Paper Bibs, Medals made from local recycled construction and demolition waste and Environmental education. The 5K Run for Clean Air made a pledge of sustainability, committed to paperless registration, organic materials, recyclable chips, and making this event zero-waste.
They also requested that everyone travel by foot, bicycle or public transit to the race – which I thought was a nice touch.
Check out my swag bag from packet pick-up:
I really like the logo on the race t-shirt. Cute & simple.
Jackson was excited about the race swag, obviously.
I really enjoyed the fact that the bib was a seed paper bib – meaning you can plant it in soil, water occasionally and watch the flowers grow {check out the directions on the bottom of the bib!} I wish I had more of a green thumb!
Pretty cool, right?
Like I said, the race was at 9am and not far from where I live so I got to sleep in a bit and then head over to the start line to get my 5k on. Every race should be this easy.
The race actually started a little late and there was a bit of confusion at the start line with the walkers starting with the runners so it was a bit packed once the race actually began, but a little weaving in and out of people solved that problem pretty quickly.
It turned out to be a really nice morning for the race. A little chilly with a breeze, but once I got running it was very refreshing. It was nice to switch up my normal workout routine and run a race with a bunch of people, way more fun way to spend my morning and get my sweat on!
There wasn’t anything terribly exciting about the course – it was just a simple out and back along West River Drive {which is opposite Kelly Drive, in Philadelphia} I usually am not a fan of the out & back runs, since I find them a bit boring as I am sure most people do – but a 5k out and back is so quick you don’t really have time to notice.
Before I knew it I saw the Philadelphia skyline in front of me and I had crossed the finish line.
Not a bad way to start my Saturday morning!
It was also fun because I got to meet up with some of my running buddies who also ran the race – {Alex, Joe, Jess & me – in order of appearance} – So much more fun to run a race with friends, wouldn’t you agree?
I am not sure what my official time was for the race yet – the results probably won’t be posted until later today – I know I wasn’t as fast as I was when I ran the Phillies 5K with my friend Brian a few weeks ago, but I will check back in later with an update !
