Jackson & Brooks

Today I wanted to give you a little update on Jackson & Brooks.

Before little baby Brooks came along, Jackson had been our little man for 7 {going on 8 this August!} years. Charles & I got Jackson the Fall after we graduated from college, so he’s been the #1 little guy in our life, with all our attention and more, for sometime now.

But for the last 4 months, we’ve obviously had a big chunk of our focus on our brand new baby boy. This has been a big transition for Jackson but the whole time he has been patient and {for the most part} understanding. He’s a very low-key, low-maintenance, super friendly, loyal little dog – but I think it’s been tough for him to get used to having someone else in the spotlight.

The first few weeks were a bit of a blur, as I think they are for most parents with a newborn. As I am breastfeeding, I am the one who is always feeding Brooks so Charles took over the reins for walking Jackson. It was tough especially for all of us because we had such a harsh winter this year – so going outside for walks with ice & snow on the ground while pregnant & with the super cold temperatures & a itty bitty baby was not ideal.

Obviously, this has been a bit of an adjustment period for Jackson because the tiny human that has taken over our world  wakes him up at night and steals his mom & dad’s attention.

But for the most part, Jackson pretty much ignores Brooks.

I’m not sure if its the fact that he isn’t interested or he’s just a little upset that now he has to compete for attention but he hasn’t really shown much interest in Brooks & when we take the little baby near him, he generally relocates to a new spot on the couch or a different area in the house. At first he was just unsure of the little baby & now it just appears that he’s not really interested in him at all.

I’d never be afraid of Jackson being aggressive or hurting Brooks in any way. Jackson is a gentle, loving, good-spirited, happy little pup – I don’t think he has a mean bone in his body. I think he is still getting used to the idea that this new little tiny human, his little brother, is here to stay {and that he now has to share mom & dad’s attention!}

I think as Brooks gets older & bigger he and Jackson will eventually become serious BFF’s – ESPECIALLY once Brooks starts eating real food {and throwing most of it on the floor!} Then I’m quite certain Jackson will warm up to his new little friend REAL QUICK!

So that’s my little baby & dog update for you – I’ve been lucky that there hasn’t been anything too crazy to happen with the two of them to share, just the fact that we need to give Jackson a little extra love whenever we can – he seems good with that arrangement!

    It’s hard to share mom and dad, but Jackson will be just fine once Brooks start to become mobile and, of course, shares his food!

    Thanks for sharing the message that dogs are just as important and in need of love and attention after having a child! I have seen so many ads selling dogs because a baby has come along and “they just can’t take care of the dog anymore”. A dog is a lifetime commitment, not just a filler until you have children. Kudos to you for knowing this and spreading the word!

      I have seen this too! I don’t understand how people can do that! A dog is a lifetime commitment! I love my dog so much I can’t imagine just getting rid of her (unless she was a threat to my child’s health/safety).

    Love this post! I have a little “shorkie” that is my BABY right now. I know eventually she will have a little brother or sister and worry about how she will take it! I know she is definitely going to need some extra love.

    Ahh Jackson is just too cute! And yes, once Brooks starts eating real food, Jackson will become his best pal 🙂

    Loved the photos of Jackson and Brooks together
