Girls Weekend in Old Town, Alexandria & on the Virginia Wine Trail

So remember a few months ago when I asked your opinion on where we should go for our girls weekend with my mom, my mother-in-law & my sister-in-law to celebrate our 30th birthdays? You all gave some amazing suggestions! Our initial plan was to go somewhere for a long weekend, somewhere none of us had ever been – we wanted to fly & spend 4-5 days there and explore. BUT vacation days & the fact that I’m still nursing and was unsure how long I could actually be away with our affecting that came into play.

So we decided to still do a long-ish weekend together but we turned it into more of a stay-cation for my mom & sister-in-law, since they live in VA & DC – and was a quick train ride for my mother-in-law & I to come down from Philly to spend Friday afternoon, Saturday & Sunday morning together. We decided to stay in Old Town, Alexandrai & hit up some of the wineries out towards the West Virginia border.

We stayed in the Hotel Monaco {which is the same hotel I stayed at when Michelle & Scott got married -it’s gorgeous!} It’s in a great location with lots of great restaurants & bars nearby, a great Farmer’s Market just outside on Saturdays and it’s a few blocks from the waterfront. ALSO – if you stay in the hotel, they have a complimentary happy hour with wines from around the world everyday from 5-6pm. Totally a nice touch & we did take advantage of that!

Our first stop of the weekend after we all arrived at the hotel was a short walk over to Bar PX – it is a hidden gem along King Street in Alexandria which features tasty, speakeasy cocktails.

After cocktails we hit up Columbia Firehouse for a tasty meal – which is in a preserved firehouse from 1883! It was a yummy meal.

We woke up Saturday morning & enjoyed breakfast at La Madeline {which has the most amazing lattes & croissants!} and then it was off to the wineries! We hired a driver for the day so no one had to worry about driving and we were able to relax and enjoy the day.

Our first stop of the day was at Veramar Vineyard in Berryville, VA – which is a 100 acre private estate & winery in the heart of Virginia’s wine country.

We enjoyed a tasting of their wines which were very delicious – I thought the wines were going to be a on the sweeter side, like they usually are on most of the Pennsylvania wine tours I have been on, but they weren’t! They were very good! I specifically enjoyed the Pink Chicken & Red Rooster!

The land the winery is located on is gorgeous – the leaves had fallen quite a bit since we were out towards the mountains but it was still some beautiful scenery to enjoy. We enjoyed a glass of wine outside on the deck next to a fire pit to keep us warm and toasty. It was a lovely way to start the day.

Obviously with views like this, we had to tackle some jumping shots {my favorite!}sister jump

Clearly the moms killed it!

Next up on our travels we went a few miles down the road to Bogati Bodega & Vineyard, which happens to be the sister winery to Veramar.

We enjoyed another tasting there – my favorite wine was the Fat Ass! Yum! I was very impressed with all the red wine offerings we tried this weekend. Since the weather had cooled down quite a bit we also got to try some hot mulled wines at each location as well – they were delicious and hit the spot!

Our final stop of the day was a favorite -> Bluemont Vineyard! This winery’s tasting room was set up on the side of a hill so the views were breathtaking.

Unfortunately we had the least time to spend here before our day was coming to an end & it was also the busiest spot we had been to. It was packed with people inside & outside enjoying the scenery {and the wines!} playing yard games and listening to live music – it was a really cool spot and I would definitely go back!

We didn’t get to do a tasting here, because it was so busy! So we bought to bottles to share & enjoyed the wine with a great view!

Also, we decided we needed to work on perfecting out jump shot {the wine helped with this decision!}sister jump bluemontmom jump bluemontgrapes the rules

Bluemont Vineyard was a great spot to spend the day – I would happily go back there to enjoy an afternoon! I hope to be back there sooner than later!

After spending the day wine tasting we headed back to Old Town for dinner at The Warehouse Bar & Grill – it was delish!

The weekend went by quickly but it was filled with yummy food, tasty wine and lots of laughs! I’m so lucky that I have such amazing women in my life & even more lucky that we got to spend the weekend together celebrating our birthdays!

Now it’s your turn to share ->

I went to Bluemont with girlfriends a couple of weeks ago. SO BEAUTIFUL! The views were epic. The wine, not so much. We couldn’t find anything we enjoyed during the tasting to do a full glass. But the staff was very nice, esp on a busy fall day! We had a blast doing a similar weekend in Charlottesville earlier this year. Would love to get back there with the Husband.
