On Winter Running – Tips for Running in the Cold + Favorite Gear

So I’m officially back running! I randomly picked it back up again, we’ve had a pretty mild start to winter here in Philly so it was nice to be able to go out for a few miles here and there in January and not have to completely bundle up. BUT it’s officially cold here now + I’ve signed up for a few races so I’ve got to stay warm, motivated and keep running!

Here are a few tips for running in the cold as well as some of my favorite winter running gear! Check it out and let me know what you think!

  1. Get Motivated! – For me I’m most motivated when I have a goal I’m working towards. Since I currently don’t have a gym membership, I am rationalizing the cost I would spend for a monthly gym membership and putting some of that towards race registration fees! When there is a race I’m signed up for and a distance I have to run, then you better believe I’m out there training for it!
  2. Run With A Buddy – Sometimes, especially when it’s really cold out, it’s so much easier to say I’m going to stay in and get things done around the house. I have a standing date, twice a week, with my neighbor Kelly – we run on Tuesdays + Thursdays when my mom is over to watch the boys. Having a set schedule, with a running buddy who is also counting on you makes braving the cold so much better.museum
  3. Time Matters – Because I stay at home with the boys, I have some extra flexibility when it comes to when I’m going to run. On my bi-weekly running date with my neighbor, we usually run in the later afternoon, when it’s warmest out. It’s nice to be able to wait for the sun to warm things up a bit and not have to go out first thing in the morning or last thing at night when it’s coldest.
  4. Dress Accordingly – I’m a big fan of all.the.layers. More on some of my favorite winter running gear below but I will say that fun pants, warms socks + shoes with traction help with running out in these cold winter months!
  5. Take it Easy – Hey, let’s be real, it’s freezing out and you are running. So you are automatically, officially a badass {at least that’s what I tell myself!} so get out there when you can, run what you can and be happy that you braved the elements to get a workout in! I always am!
