Breaking Down the Mom-Bod | The Evolution of Body After Baby {or Babies, in my Experience}

On the blog here, I try to give you a sense of my life – I share my style, my favorites, my adventures and my experience with motherhood. I admit, I like to paint a pretty picture with most because I like pretty pictures, and they are more fun to share! But I do have to take a moment to chat with you today about something I believe is not being shared enough or supported enough – especially with new moms and mom-to-be!

The Mom Bod.

+

Body After Baby.

First of all, I don’t think people talk enough about childbirth, labor and what REALLY to expect when you birth a baby –  after having been through it twice, I get that its very hard to explain what your body goes through and can be super different with each experience – but thats another story for a different day. Today I wanted to chat a bit about after your body after baby – because lets be real, childbirth does a serious NUMBER on your body!

A few of my favorites include: Fatigue, abdominal pain, pelvic pain/weakness, schedule concerns, changes in hormonal environment, social pressure, and ambiguous recovery recommendations.

Did I mention things would seriously never be in the same place again? Ha!

I knew my body was going to look different after having kids, and I have come to love my body that has birthed two healthy + beautiful baby boys – it’s also nursed those babies for 14 months+, not to mention run 3 marathons {pre #momlife}. I stay healthy, active and try to live a balanced lifestyle – but there are some things that just won’t go back to where they were before baby!

My abdominal muscles never saw that mom-bod coming!

I don’t think people talk enough about how much your body actually goes through in childbirth {unless you’ve done it, its hard to really understand or comprehend} and even more so, how much your body changes after bringing a baby into the world.

Things move.

Things change.

They change A LOT.

Did I mention things move?

Seriously, I think my rib cage will never be what it was in my 20’s – my boys moved and grooved my abdomen area all over the place! And don’t even get me started on my chest – But for me, the main thing I’ve struggled with after having two babies, while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle has been the infamous “mom pouch” – no matter what I do, how I workout or change my eating habits, it always seems to hang around!

A little evolution of my body after babies over the past 4 years.

The “mom pooch” is a loving term and can be worn as a badge of honor, but really, I just want to be able to work on my abdomen when I’m at the gym and get where I want to be! I’m proud of my body and I know I am strong, but its at my core of where I am craving more strength – because I know its in there! I have been having the hardest time with my “mom pooch” area – so I was excited when I had the opportunity to try out the Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor  program because it focuses on this area as well as other common issues associated with post-pregnancy.

The Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor program was written by personal trainer Natalie Hodson and Dr. Monique Middlekauf – a specialist in pelvic floor dysfunction. It was designed to heal Diastasis Recti, (also a cause of that “mommy pooch” in the lower abdomen). This 30 day program has lots of educational material to help the reader understand the causes of Diastasis Recti and how to heal, along with some bonus information on nutrition – did I mention these exercises don’t have to be done at the gym! Do them from your floor at home when time provides!

I’ve been trying out the program myself and WOW can I tell you what a different something you can feel when you are working out something that needs to be worked out but you didn’t even think {or know!} to focus on it before! Does that make sense? To all my fellow mom-bods out there – its a really powerful feeling! I look forward to continuing with the program and keeping you posted on hows its going for me, but between this and my Tone It Up results I am feeling better than ever!

If you are a mom-to-be or a new mom looking for additional guidance for strengthening + tightening your core, along with any other issues pregnancy can being about, be sure to check out the Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor Program over on Natalie’s website and let me know what you think!

And as a fellow mom-bod supporter, I’d love to hear what part of your mom-bod you are loving and what you are working on!

I definitely need this program! I have never heard of Natalie Hodson but I love that she is a mama who has dealt with this herself so she speaks from actual experience! Thanks so much for sharing your story!
