The Green Monster is the thing I get the most questions on in my breakfast blog posts. I get lots of emails, tweets and messages about my monsters! I wanted to spend some time this morning breaking down my green monsters and making them less scary for those non-believer’s out there!
These don’t look so scary, right?
I have come a long LONG way since my first green monster – in terms of pretty pictures of my monsters and variety of ingredients used in the drink. I have tried lots of different creations, most of which have turned out fabulously, some, however did not.
But let’s start at the beginning! Here are the basics of what you need.
3-4 cups of baby spinach – This, my friends, is the Green in the green monster! I have tried other green mixtures, but baby spinach is by far my favorite. I highly suggest starting out with these greens if you are creating your first monster!
1 cup almond milk – I love the unsweetened Blue Diamond almond milk, but you can use any type of milk you desire. I have used hemp milk before as well as regular milk when I was lacking supplies.
1 banana – frozen or fresh, the banana completes the monster!
Top it all off with 1-2 handfuls of ice and you are ready to go! The ice cools the monster down and gives it the smoothie feel, so don’t forget to add it!
Directions – Combine all ingredients together in a blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes, until all the spinach is broken down. Make sure you blend it all down until its creamy and smooth. When the blender stops, you monster should be green and bubbly!
Those are the basics to make the original green monster. I promise you that you won’t taste the spinach. Bloggers honor! And if the green color freaks you out, then put it in a colored class and drink out of a straw.
If you want to get a little crazy and add some things to that mix here are a few of my favorite additions:
2 tbsp of flax seeds and/or chia seeds – These give the monster a little crunch, which I like, plus it also gives a lot of extra nutritional goodness. Check out all the benefits of the chia seed here. I store all my seeds in pretty mason jars like a true southern girl! 🙂
I am also a fan of giving the monster a little chocolate kick sometimes when I am craving something extra sweet. I sometimes add a scoop or two of chocolate protein powder. If you are a vanilla fan, that works too! It gives the monster some extra flavor!
I also like to add additional fruit into the mix, depending on the season. Strawberries, blueberries and cherries (plus the other basic ingredients) make a nice and pretty purple monster.
If you are having trouble with the whole green monster thing, just think of how many fabulous nutrients you are getting in your body bright and early in the morning! Would you ever have 4 cups of spinach any other time other than in a salad? It’s a great way to get in those greens! I know from drinking them mostly every morning, I have noticed a difference in my skin and feel more energized. It’s a fabulous way to start your day off on the right foot!
