I have always been fearful of pies. They look so difficult to make, I never really thought an authentic homemade apple pie would be something that I could ever pull off….
When I made the executive decision to tackle the pie I immediately called my mom to ask for her baking advice. She has always been able to make a meal apple pie, and I knew she would steer me in the right direction. My mom emailed me her recipe suggestion and I knew I was on to something!
I decided to make the crust rather than buy it already made. I used sugar, flour, cinnamon and a Betty Crocker crust mixture all combined in a bowl. It went from looking like this -
I halved the crust balls and split up part of the dough for the bottom of the crust and the other half for the top. The hardest part about this whole pie experience was the crust!
Hand rolling every section out flat and trying to get it into some sort of a circle proved to be most difficult. It took me a long time to get to this point.
I then busted out my brand, spankin’ new Pyrex pie plate and got really excited about fitting the dough in it!

It took a few tries but eventually I got the dough into the pie plate comfortably enough where I knew it would hold the rest of the pie.
Then it was time to add some apples! Here are the ingredients for the filling which is from my mom’s recipe:
- 6 cups peeled/sliced apples
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
I used a combination of a few red and a few green apples for the pie.
Peeling and slicing the apples took a little longer than planned, but eventually I got them all!
Mix everything together in a bowl and before you know it you have your apple pie filling!
Add your pie filling to your doughy crust in your fancy pie plate.
Then I decided to top the crust in a traditional apple pie way – with the weave!
This took a lot of trial and error with the dough in terms of slicing the right size and getting everything to weave in and out correctly, which I managed to pull off for the most part.
I then took my fork and went around the outside of the pie indenting the crust to give it some texture.
She looks pretty, right?
I am so proud of my little pie! Now I just had to focus on not killing it in the oven!
Bake at 425* for about 40-45 minutes or until juice begins to bubble through the top crust.
In she goes…
Out she comes!

I can’t even tell you how proud of myself I am that I made this whole pie and it turned out ok!
I am so happy I went with the weave for the crust, I think it makes it look so authentic!
I also love how you can see the apples peeping out through the crust.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience with a fantastic outcome. I couldn’t have asked for a better end result on my first attempt at making pies.
The hardest part was the crust, but I am glad I went with the challenge of making my own dough. It made my first experience with pie-making more meaningful!
Now its time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor!
