Today I had the pleasure of touring The Heart of Camden Housing & Development Project in Camden, NJ which is a Community Development Corporation supporting the neighborhood of Waterfront South in Camden, New Jersey.
The Heart of Camden focuses on providing safe, decent, affordable housing for families.
It was really amazing to tour the Waterfront South area – there is so much focus on creating something from nothing in the Heart of Camden. The project has brought workers into some of the worst parts of the city to bring new life.
It was amazing to see firsthand how nothing is wasted – everything that has the potential, is given new life.
Even the old nails, pulled from condemned houses are reused, repurposed or recreated into art.
Did I mention I heart (original) exposed brick?
The old and new are blended together to creating something unique.
The project is currently bringing full neighborhood revitalization into the community, bit by bit. Recent construction is bringing new light and a new hope to Camden.
I was in the same area this time last year and I can very much see the immense difference one year has brought to the community. The area is vibrant, optimistic and ready for the change. There is so much potential in the Waterfront area it is great to see and even better to be a part of!
For more information on The Heart of Camden as well as volunteer opportunities, check out their website. I can’t wait for my next trip to Camden – maybe I will see you there!
Do you volunteer?
If time, money & location were not an option – where would you volunteer? (be creative!)
