The KonMari Method: Tidying Up, Folding Tips + Why I Love It!

So part of my New Year goals is a big one: Tidying Up! It’s something I need to do for myself, for my home and so we can move!

It’s not like my house isn’t clean or tidy, but we’ve lived here for over 5 years and have had two kids in that time – things start to pile up! And I’ve done purges + organizing many times before, but this time is completely different – because I’ve got a whole new approach.

I’ve heard about the Marie Kondo method a few times from a few friends, but I didn’t give it much thought – but now being in the space where I want to go through things, thin things out before listing our house, and being mindful of what I pack up to take to our new home – it’s a whole new world of organizing and tidying up! So when I saw the new Tidying Up with Marie Kondo series on Netflix, I gave it a go and was completely inspired and motivated to do this to my own home.

I wasn’t planning on doing a post this early in the process, because I’m only a few days in, but I posted about what I was up to on Instagram and apparently you want to see it!

Here’s a little look at the KonMari Method:

Basically, you only keep what ‘Sparks Joy’ and to see what sparks that joy, you have to go through and touch every little thing you own and make a decision. You do that by taking everything out of your closet and drawers and putting it in a pile – and that’s where the work begins, in the biggest mess of your life.

Here was me yesterday –

Our closet situation is a little unique where I have some of my hanging clothes in the master closet, but its mostly my husbands – and the rest of mine is in our boys room downstairs. So that was the beginning and below is a look at some of my donation, trash and consignment bags. Thats just the start, there are more in every room because I was in a mood to move things! And it felt SO GOOD to say goodbye to things I didn’t really love.

I was doing this all while listening to the Minimalist Episode of Young House Love has a podcast {highly recommend!} and was even more inspired. Before doing this I was in a place where I couldn’t find the things I loved and the things I wanted to wear because nothing was organized and everything was in crazy piles in drawers. So in that mindset I was really able to focus on keeping what I love and what was in good condition and not feeling bad about letting other things go.

Its all about creating that space to breathe, and it feels amazing!

One of my favorite parts of the KonMari method is the folding – ITS GENIUS! Here’s a look at how you do, but Marie Kondo also has a YouTube video where she shows you how its done as well, which is how I learned.

OMIGODYOUGUYS – This saves THE MOST SPACE. It’s incredible. And aside from all the space, you can see what you have and easily grab what you want to wear.

Serious game changer.

It took forever for me to do this yesterday, but it was so worth it and now it’s just going to be how things are done.

Seriously, look at all that space on the bottom! That was jam packed before!

Yesterday I focused on my clothes, this weekend we are going to do Charles’ and I even want to trim down the kids clothes too – it just makes getting dressed quicker, easier and more enjoyable. Its amazing!

I’ve also used this method in my kitchen and got rid of a ton of stuff, making everything easier to see, use and enjoy! There are big plans in the works to do the basement storage area next! I will keep you posted on how it is all going, but if you are thinking you need to create some space in your home and in your life, this is an awesome place to start!

Now I’d love to know – do you KonMarie??
